Subject: Petition from the British Bangladeshi Diaspora and Bangladeshi Expatriates on the Human Rights and Political Situation in Bangladesh
Dear Prime Minister,
We, the undersigned members of the British Bangladeshi diaspora and Bangladeshi expatriate community living in the United Kingdom, respectfully submit this petition to express our deep concern regarding the current human rights and political situation in Bangladesh.
As British citizens, residents, taxpayers and voters with close family ties to Bangladesh, we remain deeply concerned about the deterioration of democratic governance, the rule of law, human rights, access to justice, and public security.
We are also alarmed by the growing influence of religious extremism, which threatens Bangladesh's long-standing tradition of tolerance, pluralism and social harmony.
As fellow members of the Commonwealth, the United Kingdom and Bangladesh share a commitment to democracy, the rule of law, human rights and good governance. We therefore respectfully urge His Majesty's Government to continue its constructive engagement with Bangladesh in support of these shared Commonwealth values.
We respectfully request that the UK Government:
- Encourage the Government of Bangladesh to remove the ban on the Bangladesh Awami League through due constitutional and legal process, ensuring the participation of all peaceful political parties in a free, fair, credible, and inclusive democratic process.
- Call for fair trials, due process, judicial independence, and equal justice for all, regardless of political affiliation, in accordance with the Constitution of Bangladesh and its international human rights obligations.
- Urge independent investigations into all allegations of human rights violations, including politically motivated violence, attacks on minorities, arbitrary arrests, and abuses by both state and non-state actors, with full accountability for those responsible.
- Call for effective measures to prevent extrajudicial killings, custodial torture, custodial deaths, and arbitrary detention, while protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of all citizens.
We believe that lasting peace, stability and prosperity in Bangladesh can only be achieved through political inclusion, judicial independence, respect for fundamental freedoms, and the rejection of religious extremism and political violence.
We respectfully request your Government's continued leadership in supporting these principles and encouraging an inclusive democratic future for Bangladesh.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
